PROFESOR JEAN DAUSSET AWARD

Profesor Jean Dausset, 1980 Physiology and Medicine Nobel Price

The Professor Jean Dausset Nobel Prize 1980 award was instructed as a recognition to the altruist help in the Bone Marrow Transplant Program , to acknowledge individuals and businesses institution and organizations which have given continuous , constant and meaningful support to the Comparte Vida Foundation.

A Resemblance of Professor Jean Dausset

Professor Jean Baptiste Gabriel Joachim Dausset was born in Toulouse France, on October 19, 1916, graduted from the School of Medicine in Paris in 1945, obtaining his degree in Hematology and Internal Medicine at Harvard School of Medicine in 1950. He is a brilliant Hematologist who discovered important autoimmune problems.  He began his career as Director of the National Laboratories of the Blood transfusion Center in France.  He began an extraordinary investigation in immunogenetics, discovering the HLA complex , located in chromosome  six in 1959, and he performed the first kidney transplant, based on HLA compatibility in 1963 along with his colleague Dr. Felix Rappaport.

He was the creator and president of the France Transplant Group and in 1982 he established and organized the Bone Marrow Grafts-France-Transplant , which gave the opportunity of life to thousands of patients. He is Professor Honoris Causa at eight Universities of different countries and member of the Science Academy of seven Nations.  He is the author of more than 400 original research articles and numerous books , also writer of many chapters in scientific books.

In 1980 he was granted with the most important recognition a scientist can receive the Nobel Prize of Medicine and Physiology for discovering the HLA gene complex , a fundamental part of the Genome and extremely important for transplantation. With the reward obtained from the Nobel Prize he created the Central of Studies for Human polymorphisms (CEPH) in Paris, that receives offers and processes DNA of patients with different complex  diseases with genetic background , in order to apply in the future predictive,, preventive and therapeutic measures based on the knowledge of the molecular genetics  for the benefit of mankind.

Overall, Jean Dausset , is a great humanist and a fighter for human rights.  In 1992 he created the Universal Movement of Scientific Responsibility (MURS) and stimulated the formation of the International Bioethical Committee for the use of the advances of Modern Medicine and mainly of the Human  Genome Project. The human quality , ethic, moral, and intellectual as well as the sensibility of this great man, is an example for humanity to follow.

International  Accreditation and External Quality Control

In January, 2004 at the Department of  Immunology and Immunogenetics, which serves to this program, was accredited internationally by ASHI, as an advanced high specialization laboratory to handle the DONORMO/BACECU and to perform any study in the field of Immunogenetics.

This accreditation has international character , to offer and receive units and donors for patients from and for any worldwide  Refisstry or Transplant Center. It is the first Latin American Laboratory which has received this accreditation after the one in Puerto Rico.

Inscription to the internal commission of evaluation on the National institution of scientific and technological companies in Mexico. RENIECYT (CONACYT)

The Fundación comparte Vida A.C. Has been registered on the RENIECYT since the creation of the government commission and its registry number is 2005/663.

FOUNDATION ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. International Accreditation from the American Society of Histocompatibility and Inmunogenetics(ASHI), January, 2004, mandatory requirement for performing CPHs transplants from related or not related donors.
  2. Successful 2004 National Federal Agency Commission Against Sanitary Risk. (COFEPRIS)
  3. Standard technology for DNA, serology and advanced Cell techniques.
  4. We are on an external Quality Control program from the University of Los Angeles California (UCLA) and with South Eastern Procurement Foundation (SEOPF), who send us hidden samples for genetic tipification and cross tests for transplants.
  5. We keep a tight quality control of BACECU y DONORMO based on international standards.
  6. We work with almost 200 national centers throughout the country and US, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and many Latin American Countries.
  7. Donor transference from other Register to DONORMO (USA, NMDP, France Register and others).
  8. We've achieved bounds to continue the support of  low economical resources patients with the Secretaría de Gobernación, Cáritas Arquidiócesis and Rotary International.
  9. The home of Ronald McDonald and the Casa de Andrea are the best places for treated children. They have given shelter and home feeling for 8 patients for a whole year.
  10. Our experts have developed  the DONORMO/BACECU system with leading edge technology comparable to the BMDW (Bone Marrow Donors World Wide) register system. Our staff is highly trained on criopreservation, molecular biology, cell and serological techniques.

    Foundation Strategies:

  • We must continue with our activities in the worldwide search of BMDW with high quality effectiveness, in continuous contact with all of the worldwide registries, permanent updating of the data base and fulfilling international quality standards in every process.
  • Increase the quality of every process.  It is necessary to attract  at least 100,000 donors to cover up 70% of the Mexican patients who live around the globe and type them by DNA techniques, and keep very well characterized umbilical cord units.
  • To extend diversity at DONORMO/BACECU , it is imperative to include ethnic minorities like the different Caucasian groups in Mexico, Orientals, Jews, Arabians, and other Latin Americans.
  • Emphasize the development of BACECU for the Mexican population , because there are 10,000,000 natives who are not exempted from needing a transplant. There is not one single registry worldwide with Indigenous  population from Central  and South America .
  • Obtaining financial aid from businesses , organizations and institutions for and  the amount of 5 million dollars for the program of  hematopoyetic stem cells (PROCEP) reinforcement. In order to acomplish the goals, it is important to consolidate alliances with national and international associations.
  • Developing donor centers and placental blood recruitment centers for DONORMO/BACECU across the country to increase the genetic diversity.
  • Have all the technical, physical and  human infrastructure at the different transplant centers working  with the program, DONORMO/BACECU.
Fragments of One of the Messages from  the Nobel Prize 1980, Professor Jean Dausset

…I admire the iniciative of Clara Gorodezky and her team in favor of bone marrow donation by creating a Foundation whose mission is to facilitate for a great number of sick people a stem cells transplant which can save them.  I admire those individuals who are volunteer bone marrow donors, and who are kept anonymous to the patient whom they are helping.  Their devotion is complete and their only reward is the satisfaction of having helped someone by giving a small amount of that precious substance which is the bone marrow and which produces all elements of human blood...

This wonderful action and many other love kind gestures contrast with those acts of violence, hatred and horror which some humans are capable of doing and the media bring to us to see day after day.  Mysteries of the human soul!

Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to take part in two assignments:  the first one consists on informing the vast public about the results obtained thanks to a bone marrow transplant.  It is a propaganda mission, one very necessary to the success of the second assignment:  to recruit new volunteer donors within the Mexican population.  I have no doubt that Mexicans, like people from other parts of the globe will  answer favorably and generously to these solidarity callings!!!
